Brazil breaks chicken meat production record

The numbers from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show that Brazil broke its record for chicken meat production in the first quarter of 2023. There were 3.4 million tons of this food.

The average weight was around 2 kilos per animal. The IBGE released the data on Tuesday, 6.

Brazil is in the second position in the global ranking for chicken meat production. Moreover, the country is the world’s largest exporter of this food.

In 2022, for example, the volume produced nationally closed at 15.2 million tons. The quantity for 2023 will close at 15.6 million tons, according to the estimates of the National Supply Company.

Of the total for this year, 4.5 million tons should be exported. The remaining 10.6 million tons are for the domestic market.

In other words: 71% are consumed by the local population itself. That’s 51 kilograms per inhabitant annually.

Thus, this is the most consumed animal protein in the country.
Brazil and the poultry-producing states

In the country, 16 states have significant volumes of chicken slaughtering. Three of them concentrate 60% of the entire production of this type of protein.

With 1.2 million tons, Paraná leads the top three in the first quarter. Santa Catarina comes in second (440,000 tons), followed by São Paulo (390,000 tons).

Around 95% of production takes place in the Center-South of the country. This area comprises the South, Southeast, and Center-West regions.

In addition to the Federal District, ten states make up this part of the country.

They are Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo.

Of this list, four states have confirmed outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in 2023: Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo.

However, all disease cases recorded in the national territory occurred in wild birds. Thus, the disease has not affected the chicken meat industry in Brazil.
