Watch the Last Lunar Eclipse of 2023 This Saturday

This Saturday, the last lunar eclipse of 2023 will occur, with part of the moon entering Earth’s darker shadow, making it a partial eclipse.

The rest stays in a lighter shadow called the penumbra. In Brazil, most viewers will see only the penumbral phase.

In this phase, the moon won’t change color much. However, some eastern parts of Brazil will see a more vivid show.

Astronomer Josina Nascimento explains that certain states will see up to 6% of the moon covered.

These states include Ceará, Pernambuco, and others. Overall, only 6% of the moon will enter the darker shadow, creating a ‘bite-like’ effect.

Time and Date states that many parts of the world can also see the event. This includes Europe, Asia, and even Antarctica.

How to Watch

No special gear is needed to watch a lunar eclipse. Just find a good spot facing east. The moon will already be in an eclipse when it rises.

If you can’t see it well, there’s a live stream starting at 3 p.m., Brasília time.

Stages to Know

The eclipse goes through five stages. First, the lighter shadow phase starts. Then, the darker shadow phase begins.

Next, the eclipse reaches its maximum point. After that, the darker shadow phase ends. Finally, the lighter shadow phase concludes.

The whole event will last 4 hours and 25 minutes.

Background

The occurrence of lunar eclipses isn’t rare, but each one offers a unique viewing experience.

Historically, these celestial events have intrigued humanity. Ancient cultures often associated them with omens or divine messages.

In modern times, they serve as educational events, helping us understand Earth and its celestial neighbors.

In 2023, this is the last chance to see a lunar eclipse, making it an important moment for skywatchers.

Lunar eclipses also offer opportunities for scientific study. Researchers often use them better to understand Earth’s atmosphere and the moon’s properties.

Overall, eclipses like this one not only captivate casual viewers but also serve as valuable events for scientific and cultural education.
