Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago revisit their cooperation

Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago revisited their energy sector cooperation.

The meeting included Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Trinidad and Tobago’s Energy Minister Stuart Young.

Also present were Venezuela’s Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and Petroleum Minister Pedro Tellechea.

Edmund Dillon, Trinidad and Tobago’s ambassador to Caracas, also attended.

The Caracas’ Miraflores Palace meeting focused on reviewing the bilateral energy relationship.

State channel VTV emphasized the “excellent relations” maintained by both governments. They have strengthened ties in energy, gas, and border security for the common good.

In March, Trinidad’s government announced a confidentiality agreement with Pdvsa. This agreement was to continue the Dragon field oil project in Venezuela’s Sucre state.

The field is in Venezuela’s waters, near Trinidad and Tobago’s northwest coast and the Hibiscus platform.

The Port of Spain government and Shell jointly own the Hibiscus platform.

The Dragon Field project faced delays due to capital shortages and US sanctions. However, in January, the US Treasury approved a license for Port of Spain.

This license allows the development of the Dragon gas deposit, as Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Keith Rowley reported.
