Morocco Aims for Green Hydrogen Dominance in Northern Africa

Morocco, under King Mohammed VI’s guidance, aims to spearhead the green hydrogen market in North Africa through swift action.

Green hydrogen comes from water and renewable energy like solar and wind. This form of hydrogen can reduce carbon emissions in many sectors.

Morocco sees it as key for export and local fertilizer production.

Samir Rachidi, head of the research institute Iresen, admits the sector is new. Yet, the Ministry of Economy has already set aside 1.5 million hectares for eight production plants.

Many foreign investors have expressed interest. Now, 38% of the country’s electricity comes from renewable sources. The aim is to reach 52% by 2030.

Global demand for green hydrogen is rising. Morocco plans to use its rich phosphate reserves to produce “green ammonia” for fertilizers.

They aim to make one million tons by 2027. Other North African nations are also stepping up.

A Deloitte report suggests this region could lead in green hydrogen exports by 2050. Algeria and Tunisia are making similar plans.

Algeria wants to produce one million tons for Europe by 2040. Tunisia plans to export up to 6 tons by 2050.

But to achieve these goals, both countries must boost their renewable energy use.

Background

Morocco’s initiative could set a trend for the entire region. This venture may spark a green energy revolution across North Africa.

Furthermore, Morocco’s focus on green hydrogen could reshape regional power dynamics. Morocco could gain leverage over its neighbors if it leads in this industry.

Yet, global market forces play a role too. The success of this venture hinges on international demand for green hydrogen.

Morocco also faces infrastructural challenges. The country must build robust facilities to produce and store hydrogen safely.
