Mexico Launches Historic Presidential Race

At the onset of March 1st, Mexico initiated its most significant election campaign ever.

The race features three diverse candidates: two women vying to become the first female president and a millennial offering fresh perspectives

Claudia Sheinbaum of the “Let’s Keep Making History” coalition and Xóchitl Gálvez from the “Strength and Heart for Mexico” group stress their groundbreaking potential.

Meanwhile, Jorge Álvarez Máynez from the Citizen Movement underscores his youth as an advantage.

Gálvez began her campaign in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, a city grappling with high insecurity. She proposes reforms in security and customs to curb crime and illegal arms imports.

Sheinbaum, the former head of Mexico City and Morena’s candidate, chose the iconic Zócalo Square to start her campaign, signaling a major speech.

Álvarez Máynez will kick off his campaign in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, a region troubled by violence, marking a bold start.

Gálvez aligns with the private sector and historic parties.

Sheinbaum seeks to continue President López Obrador’s economic policies, blending public initiatives with private investment.

Álvarez Máynez, leaning left, aims for his party’s prominence, advocating progressive worker benefits while opposing certain nationalizations.

This campaign, running until May 29, 2024, precedes a silent period before the June 2 vote.

Today, nearly 99 million Mexicans will vote for president, senators, deputies, governors, and local officials, pivotal for Mexico’s democracy.

This election not only shapes the nation’s leadership but also reflects its evolving political landscape and societal values.
