Even after so many years, Mexicans still love López Obrador

Even after so many years, Mexicans still love Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In power since 2018, the Mexican President holds a 60% approval rating, but there is increasing concern among the population about insecurity in the country, as revealed by a Reforma newspaper survey.

Six out of ten Mexicans approved of “the way López Obrador is doing his job as president” in August, the same proportion as the newspaper’s last measurement in May.

However, 38% disapproved of his management, one percentage point less than in the previous survey.

Yet, the survey showed that two-thirds % of Mexicans, 67%, believe that insecurity “is the main problem in the country today,” nine percentage points more than the 58% recorded in the previous measurement.

Corruption was considered the biggest problem by 10% of respondents, followed by the economy (7%), unemployment (3%), and poverty (1%).

Additionally, 53% of Mexicans believe that “a change of direction is necessary,” while 44% think that “it is better for things to continue as they are.”

The survey was published just days before the presidential candidates for the 2024 elections were defined.

López Obrador’s party, the National Regeneration Movement  (Morena), will define its presidential candidacy on September 6, while the opposition front, Va por México, will do so on September 3.

52% of respondents favored the president, expressing opinions about the elections, and 38% were against.

However, 56% were against the president attacking opposition candidates, and only 32% were in favor.

The national survey was conducted at homes from August 18 to 23 among 1,000 adults, with a 4% margin of error and a 95% confidence level.
