Chinese Firm Launches Long-Life Atomic Battery for Future Tech

Beijing Betavolt New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company, has introduced a groundbreaking “atomic battery,” the Betavolt BV100.

This innovative battery uses nickel-63 isotope decay and diamond semiconductor technology.

Despite its small size of 15 x 15 x 5mm, smaller than a coin, it boasts an impressive 50-year lifespan.

The BV100 provides a power output of 100 microwatts at 3 volts, and plans are underway for mass production by year’s end. An enhanced version with 1-watt output is expected in 2025.

The Betavolt BV100, utilizing a radioactive nickel-63 isotope, offers a unique energy solution with minimal power but extraordinary longevity.

This technology could power smartphones without recharging or enabling continuous drone flight.

The nickel-63 decays into harmless copper, making the BV100 safer than previous nuclear batteries. Its manufacturers aim to release a successor with ten times higher output next year.

This battery’s technology stems from a century-old concept of isotope technology, capturing energy from nuclear decay.

Revolutionizing Energy Storage

The nickel-63 in the BV100, with a half-life of over 100 years, guarantees stability. Energy is generated as beta particles from the decay irradiate a diamond semiconductor, creating an electric field.

The BV100’s potential extends to various applications, from perpetual drones to deep-sea devices and possibly electric vehicles with further advancements.

Safety is paramount; the battery emits no external radiation, making it suitable even for medical devices like pacemakers.

This innovation aligns with China’s strategic goals under its 14th Five-Year Plan, focusing on technological breakthroughs.

Betavolt’s ongoing research includes exploring other isotopes like strontium-90 and promethium-147 for future high-power, long-life batteries.

Betavolt’s development marks a significant leap in energy storage technology.

It paves the way for a new paradigm in energy use, particularly in applications requiring long-term power and in sectors where traditional batteries are inadequate.
