São Paulo Sírio-Libanês Hospital Sidelines 90 Employees Infected with Coronavirus

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Sírio-Libanês Hospital, located in São Paulo, announced on Friday, March 27th, that 90 of its employees had been ordered home after being infected with coronavirus. The hospital reported that the tests are conducted regularly among health staff and employees for the patients’ safety.

By late last week, about 900 tests had already been performed. The general director of the hospital, Paulo Chapchap, sent a message to the employees thanking them for their dedication and reinforcing concern over everyone’s protection.

São Paulo continues to be the state with the largest number of cases of the novel coronavirus in the country, according to official information from the Ministry of Health. There are 1,406 infections among the 3,904 confirmed cases in Brazil so far. The country also records 116 deaths, 84 in São Paulo alone.

The Hospital Sírio-Libanês (Syrian-Lebanese Hospital) is one of the most important hospitals in Brazil and South America. The hospital was founded by the large Syrian and Lebanese community of São Paulo in 1921. It is one of the most well-known health facilities in Brazil due to the high quality of care.
