SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – Governor João Doria announced on Wednesday, May 13th, that gyms, beauty salons and barbershops should remain closed in the state of São Paulo. The statement was made during a press conference at the Bandeirantes Palace in Morumbi, west zone of São Paulo.
The inclusion, by Jair Bolsonaro’s government, of gyms, beauty salons and barbershops as essential services during the novel coronavirus pandemic, led to reactions from many state governors, who said they will not follow these guidelines.
“About the presidential decree on gyms and beauty salons, here in São Paulo the government respects and listens to its Secretary of Health, its Health Committee. The Health Committee and the Secretary point out that we do not yet have safe health conditions to authorize the opening of gyms, beauty salons and barbershops at this time,” Doria said.
“Our greatest respect for these professionals is to safeguard their lives, their existence and their health,” he added. Doria said no changes will be introduced to São Paulo’s quarantine until May 31st.
