Dominican Republic outperforms Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia in tourist numbers

As per the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Dominican Republic outperformed Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia in tourist arrivals in 2022.

Despite being 175 times smaller than Brazil, the Dominican Republic attracted more than seven million tourists, while Brazil had 3.6 million.

Colombia registered 4.4 million visitors during the same timeframe. UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, stated in May that the quick rebound of the Dominican Republic’s tourism sector post-pandemic positions it above the global average.

This trend seems to be ongoing, with more than 4.5 million tourists visiting the nation, which shares its borders with Haiti, in the first five months of 2023 alone.

By May 2023, over 3.3 million tourists had arrived by air, while 1.1 million came as cruise passengers – a phenomenon unprecedented in the country, as per local officials.

The Ministry of Tourism revealed that the top countries from where tourists originated in May were the United States (51.6%), Canada (11.4%), Colombia (4.2%), Argentina (4.1%), and Puerto Rico (3.5%).

The Minister of Tourism projects that by year’s end, the Dominican Republic will see a record-breaking 7.9 million tourists arriving by air alone.
