Vasco Beat Resende in Carioca: Daily

By Robbie Blakeley, Senior Contributing Reporter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Vasco da Gama retained their perfect record in the 2013 Campeonato Carioca with a comfortable 4-2 win over Resende last night in Volta Redonda. A brace from Bernardo helped the Cruz-Maltino take top spot in Group A after three rounds.

Bernardo opened the scoring after ten minutes and from then on Vasco were rarely threatened. Resende attempted to hit on the counter but were stung five minutes before the interval when Dedé doubled Vasco’s lead.

Dudu pulled one back for the home side just before the break but less than three minutes after the restart Bernardo had restored Vasco’s two goal cushion. Again Resende replied, this time through Marcel, but as the game developed their limitations, physical and technical, were ruthlessly exposed.

Leonardo wrapped up the points for the visitors eight minutes from time, scoring Vasco’s eleventh goal in just three games in 2013. On Thursday, the Group A pace setters play their first classico of the year against Flamengo at the Engenhão Stadium.

This afternoon (Sunday, Janiary 27th), Fluminense and Botafogo meet in the first Carioca derby of 2013, also at the Engenhão.
