RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Fluminense bounced back from Sunday’s shocking defeat to Bahia with a comfortable 3-1 win over relegation candidates Avai at the Engenhão last night in the 25th round of the Brasileirão. Brazilian international Fred scored his side’s first two goals either side of an Avai reply and an exquisite cross from full-back Mariano was converted by Martinuccio to make the points safe.
But the pain carries on for Flamengo, who mustered a 1-1 draw away to Atletico-MG. The Rubro Negro came from a goal down after Daniel Carvalho’s free-kick gave the hosts the lead; Ronaldinho equalized from the edge of the area to score his thirteenth goal of the campaign.
Despite a positive performance, Flamengo have now gone ten games without a win and look to be out of this year’s title race.
Tonight, Botafogo travel to Porto Alegre to face Gremio, whilst Vasco host Atletico-GO looking to wrest top spot back from São Paulo, who recorded a goalless draw with Corinthians yesterday.
