World Soccer: Belgium Leads FIFA Ranking, Brazil Remains in Third

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Fifa announced on Thursday, December 19th, the last update of its 2019 ranking of teams and confirmed Belgium as top of the list, with 1,765 points. Brazil, on the other hand, which this year won the Copa America title, remains in third position.

Thus, Belgium is ahead of France, with 1,733 points, the second place. And Brazil is chased by England, in fourth place, Uruguay, Croatia, Portugal, Spain, Argentina and Colombia, a team that closes the top 10 in the ranking of FIFA in 2019.

This year, Qatar undertook the biggest leap in the ranking, largely due to winning the Asian Cup title, beating Japan in the final. The host team of the next World Cup also participated in the Copa America in Brazil, as an invited team, and jumped 38 places, from 93rd to 55th place.

The Japanese team also had a relevant rise in 2019, a year that started in 50th place and now finished in 28th place. But the only team to have made a greater leap than Qatar was Algeria, who won 32 places and became the world’s No. 35 team in the year they won the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

In Europe, Kosovo climbed 16 places to 115th. And the next commitments of FIFA’s newest member will be in March, for the qualifying play-off for the UEFA European Championship in 2020.

The next update of FIFA’s ranking will be released on February 20.
