RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In an official statement, the Workers’ Party (PT) criticized yesterday what it called a “coup attempt” in Venezuela after the military movement that took shape on Tuesday (30th).
Earlier, Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaidó announced that he has the support of a military group to restore democracy and “end the usurpation of power” – a term used by the anti-Chavez to refer to the government of Nicolas Maduro.
The document signed by the PT president, Gleisi Hoffmann, reads that the opposition has tried “to overthrow the democratically elected government of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela for years” and that Maduro’s government has the population’s support due to “years of policies focused on the well-being of the population and contrary to imperialistic exploitation and local elites.”
Gleisi also attacked the international economic embargo that is hindering Venezuelan economy and once again called for dialogue to solve the deadlock in the neighboring country.
“Peace in Venezuela is a struggle of all Latin-American democrats and the world”.
A couple of days ago in an exclusive interview with Brazil’s Folha de S.Paulo and Spain’s El Pais newspapers, Lula said: “Brazil is being governed by “a bunch of lunatics, or “crazy people,” (um bando de malucos).
