Uruguay has world’s highest coronavirus death rate in the past week

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Uruguay recorded 16.82 deaths per 1 million inhabitants in the last 7-day average, reported the Our World in Data website.

With the pandemic advancing in the region, Uruguay topped the world’s daily death list from coronavirus in relation to its population in the last week, according to Our World in Data website. The small South American country recorded 16.82 deaths per 1 million inhabitants in the last 7-day average.

Globally, Uruguay – which had been one of the countries that best controlled the pandemic in 2020 – is followed by North Macedonia (15.36); Hungary (13.89), which in the last few days recorded a sharp drop; Paraguay (11.64), and Croatia (10.96).

Uruguay’s figure is significant when compared to the rest of the region, as the South American average stood at 8.76 deaths per 1 million people last week.

According to data from the Uruguayan Ministry of Health, since the health emergency was declared on March 13th, 1,873,060 coronavirus tests have been processed and 213,449 positive cases have been recorded. So far, 2,972 deaths have been confirmed as Covid-19 in the country, which has a population of 3.5 million.

There are currently 25,971 active cases, 539 of them in critical care units. Of the total number of confirmed positive cases, 6,845 involve healthcare personnel.
