Thursday’s Rio Nightlife Pick – Current indie heroes The xx are in town tonight, performing at Vivo Rio in Flamengo. The group’s debut album, “xx”, won universal acclaim and ranked well on “best of the year” lists, placing ninth on the Rolling Stone list. In the 2009 NME Future Fifty list, The xx were positioned at number six, and in October 2009, they were named one of MTV Iggy’s “Top Ten Bands with Buzz”.

The band began simply as a duo, formed by members Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft. Guitarist Baria Qureshi joined once they began performing in 2005, with Jamie Smith joining a year later. The xx have been brought to Rio by “Queremos”, a groundbreaking format that gets fans directly involved in the process of making a concert happen using crowdfunding.
