We have the top three picks for this Saturday, and below there is a list of bars and lounges that are always a good option.

PARTY:
Festival de Ativação Urbana @ Núcleo de Ativação Urbana (Santo Cristo) – For the first edition of FAU in 2019, they are joining forces with the Instituto Black Bom, whose projects are also shaking up the urban circuit of Rio de Janeiro.

Not only will there be a huge daytime cultural program, with a creative fair, gastronomy, fashion and of course, lots of good music, the party will keep going into the evening and through to the next morning. Musical attractions include a ‘Roda de Samba’ (samba circle) courtesy of Moça Prosa and a DJ set from DJ Rainha Crespa, among many, many other spectacular musical guests.

This event will begin at 6PM and is free to enter through an online ticketing system.

LIVE:
Vanguart Acoustic Night @ Teatro Rival Petrobras (Centro) – An acoustic evening with popular Brazilian indie-rock band Vanguart.

Formed in 2002 by band leader, vocalist and violinist Helio Flanders, the group take influence from such acts as Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Lobão and Raul Seixas, to name a few. They have released two albums, 2002’s ‘Ready to…’ and 2003’s ‘The Noon Moon,’ where they sing in a mixture of Portuguese, Spanish and English, giving the group’s work a truly international feel.

Tickets are between R$35-R$70 and doors open at 7:30PM.

PARTY:
Pré-Carnaval: 15 anos do bloco Me Enterra @ Cordão da Bola Preta (Lapa) – 2019 will be the debut of the bloco ‘Me Enterra’ and this is a chance to taste some of the Carnival spirit before the March madness.

This will be the official ‘Pré-Carnaval’ formation of the bloco playing their colorful repertoire of marchinhas, forrós, sambas, ijexás and cirandas

The special guest of the bloco is the songwriter, instrumentalist, and first woman to lead an orchestra in Brazil: Chiquinha Gonzaga. ‘Corta Jaca’ is one of her main works, and they will be playing this song in her honor. There will also be a DJ playing music in the intervals to keep the Carnival spirit high throughout.

Tickets are between R$20 – R$30 and the night starts at 10PM.

Winehouse (Botafogo)
Winehouse is a wine bar run by a British expat that has brought an eclectic range of wines to Rio including a mix of fabulous national wines and international favorites. There is also a great selection of nibbles and cheese boards. For those that aren’t too keen on wine, there is plenty of beer and cocktail options too. Happy hour begins at 5PM and finishes at 8PM.

Void/House of Food (Botafogo)
Blending culinary, drinks and fashion, the bar/store invites a different chef to prepare a new menu every week. Besides great imported beer labels, it usually serves delicious veggie food and homemade burgers.

Pavão Azul (Copacabana)
Pavão Azul is a lively bar in Copacabana, famous for its exceptionally cold beers and prawn pastels. It gets crowded there every night, making every day of the week seem like the weekend.

Canastra Bar (Ipanema)
The Canastra Wine Bar in Ipanema offers a great selection of wines and cheeses and is quickly becoming known for its nice atmosphere and friendly service.

Blue Agave (Ipanema)
Blue Agave Ipanema is always a great place for Mexican food, drinks and for watching live sport streams and broadcasts. Just around the corner from Posto 9, the bar is also known for its mostly English-speaking staff and crowd which frequents the establishment. Be sure to check out Blue Agave in Copacabana also for a great night out.
