FotoRio 2015 Photography Exhibitions Open in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Beginning Wednesday, May 13th and continuing through July 26th, Centro Cultural Correios in Rio de Janeiro will host FotoRio events that include debates, video screenings, and six new photography exhibitions. Part of the ongoing 450th anniversary celebrations of Rio de Janeiro, the exhibitions and events will focus on the city, its people and its landscapes.

This year marks the eighth edition of FotoRio’s Encontro Internacional de Fotografia do Rio de Janeiro (International Photography Meeting in Rio de Janeiro). Founded over ten years ago, FotoRio is a non-profit organization that aims to bring attention to photography and photographers both Brazilian and International, through courses, seminars, workshops and exhibitions.

The six photography exhibitions which will be hosted by Centro Cultural Correios include; sixty photographs by photojournalist Ana Carolina Fernandes, a thirty-year veteran in her field; twenty-five photographs by Zeca Linhares, who has being shooting images of Carnival celebrations for over forty years; and “Gente do Rio” (People of Rio), an exhibition by photographer Alécio de Andrade, which features forty-five portraits of Rio artists and intellectuals including Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Manuel Bandeira, Marques Rebelo, Oscar Niemeyer, and Vinícius de Moraes, among others.

The exhibition, “Passinho de Angola” (Passinho of Angola) will include twenty photographs by Maria Buzanovsky of the capoeira event, Roda do Cais do Valongo, and of the passinho or “little step” dance events that take place throughout the city, while the “#MinhaJanelaMinha” exhibition will feature three hundred and sixty-five images taken by photographer Ana Rodrigues from her window during the course of a year. Finally, the collective exhibition “Na Palma da Mão” (In the Palm) with feature forty-five images curated by Julieta Roitman of mobile phone users around the city.

The debates will include “Fotojornalismo Brasileiro em Foco” (Brazilian Photojournalism in Focus), organized and to be presented on three days by photgrapher and photojournalism historian, Silvana Louzad; Fotografia em Revista (Magazine Photography) with Helouise Costa, Joaquim Marçal, and Silvana Louzada ; Novos Olhares para o instantâneo no fotojornalismo do século XX (New Views of the Snapshot in the Photojournalism of the Twentieth Century) with Silvana Louzada, Maria do Carmo Rainho and Ana Paula Goulart; and “Olhar Engajado” (Look Engaged) with photographers Ratão Diniz and Ana Carolina Fernandes, along with mediator Silvana Louzada.

The video screenings will include “Foto em Cena” (Photo on Stage), a work by Débora 70 featuring clips of Canal Brasil and the photographers who developed their career there and “Rio de Memórias” (Memories of Rio) a documentary about Rio de Janeiro, told by filmmakers José Inácio Parente and Patrícia Monte-Mór through old photographs.
