“The idea came about due to this critical moment Rio’s history,” a representative of ‘100 Em 1 Dia Rio’ told The Rio Times, adding, “Because we love our city, we believe that it needed a bit of positive media and some care from its inhabitants. That’s exactly what the festival is about.”

Originally the ‘100 In 1 Day’ festival begin in Bogotá, Colombia with a small group of students who organized events in the hopes of together, through various initiatives, making their city a better place to live. The first edition saw an attendance of less than 100 volunteers but by the event’s third year, the group managed to gather more than 3,000 people together in support of their causes.

The event has since spread to an additional sixteen cities in ten countries, with a large online following. It now arrives in Rio thanks to the help of Renata Tasca and Myrtes Mattos. “We knew of the online festival and begin the process of bringing the festival to the wonderful city,” said an spokesperson.

When asked what they hoped to achieve by bringing the festival Rio, the organizer said; “I hope people rethink their relationship with the city and with public space and understand that it is their role as caring citizens of the city. Cariocas (natives of Rio) are proud to have been born in one of the most beautiful cities, but to have pride, you also need to care for and act in the city.”

Today’s events in Rio include; the group Time de Crioulo performing at the Feira da Glória at 12PM, the Bloquete, or alternative street party, with live DJs in front of Centro’s La Paz club from 2PM – 8PM; ADAPTSURF, free sports and leisure actvities on the beach with adapted access for people of all ages with disabilities, at Leblon Beach in front of Posto (lifeguard station) 11 at 2PM, a parkour flash mob near Ipanaema’s Posto 10 at 3PM; Amores de Rio, where photographer lafa Cac presents a photobooth where people can record their love for Rio or each other in Urca beginning at 3PM; DJs LencinhO and Túlio Baía performing at Festa Tupiniquim in Barra da Tijuca at 4PM and many other activities.
