Three People Die During Police Operation in Rio’s West Zone

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Three people died and a baby was shot during a state police (MP) operation in Community 48, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, the morning of Wednesday, August 14th.

Among the deceased are Margareth Teixeira, the baby’s mother, who was passing through the area as the MP confronted the suspects. The wounded were taken to Albert Schweitzer Hospital, in Realengo, but only the child arrived alive. His condition is stable, according to the Municipal Secretary of Health.

The police disclosed that the operation was intended to restrict armed confrontations between rival criminal groups. While approaching, there was an “intense armed reaction.”

The dynamics of the case will be analyzed in an investigative procedure set up by the battalion commander. The case will also be investigated by the 34th Civil Police station, where it was registered.

According to the police, they seized two rifles, two handguns, ammunition, and radio transmitters.
