Portuguese Ship Re-enacting First World Round Trip in History Will Sail Through Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Sagres school-ship, the main cadet training vessel of the Portuguese Navy, is coming to Rio de Janeiro.

The vessel, which will be sailing through the city from February 10th to 15th, is replicating the odyssey of the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who made the world’s first circumnavigation trip, which began in 1519 and ended in 1522. This voyage served to confirm the scientific understanding of the time and demonstrated that the Earth, as we know it today, was round.

The 89.5 meter long ship, built in 1937 in Hamburg, left Lisbon on January 5th, sailed through Tenerife (Spain), Praia (Cape Verde) and reached Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) on Monday (February 10th).

In total, the Sagres will travel for 371 days, sailing through Tokyo, where it will serve as the “House of Portugal” during the initial period of the Olympic Games, and taking part in the 500th anniversary celebrations of the Discovery of the Strait of Magellan in Punta Arenas, Chile.

In its stopover in the City of Rio de Janeiro, the school-ship will be anchored at Pier Armazém 7 (near AquaRio), with an extensive schedule. On February 10th, celebrating its arrival, there was an official act with Portuguese Defense Minister João Gomes Cravinho, in a private event.

On the 11th (from 10 AM to 12 PM and from 2 PM to 6 PM), on the 12th (from 10 AM to 12 PM and from 2 PM to 4 PM) and on the 14th (from 10 AM to 12 PM and from 2 PM to 6 PM) the Sagres school-ship will be open to the public. In these schedules, members of the Portuguese Navy will be available to answer visitors’ questions.

On Wednesday, February 12th, there will also be a ceremony of the Oeiras City Hall. On Thursday, February 13th, the Association of Tourist Entrepreneurs of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes (AETUR), with a remarkable crew, will present the initiative “Meetings from Douro” in which it will promote, during an exclusive dinner on board, the wines, tourism and culture of the region, as well as seek to capture new business for the Douro and Trás-os-Montes regions.

In the “Meetings from Douro” action, tour operators and travel agents will be on board the Sagres school-ship, as well as opinion makers belonging to the areas of tourism and enogastronomy, entrepreneurs, importers and managers of the Food and Beverage (F&B) departments of the main hotels and restaurants in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, who will be invited to get to know the region’s products and tourist offers.

The guests will have access to information on products from almost 160 companies from Trás-os-Montes and Douro regions, from travel experiences, flavors in the territory or more institutional data about the different municipalities. The initiative aims to develop actions that value Portugal, its history and its role in the world, in order to strengthen ties between the two countries.
