Municipal Guard Meets Resistance When Removing Bathers from Rio’s Beaches

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Saturday, the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Guard conducted the “Blitz da Vida” (Blitz of Life) Operation, combing Rio’s beaches to curb crowds and demand the wearing of masks.

Despite the city government's ban, many people enjoyed the sunny day in the city to break social isolation and either go to the beach or walk on the boardwalk.

In all, there are 81 municipal guards inspecting the famous beaches in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro, acting in partnership with the State Police.

Despite the city government’s ban, many people enjoyed the sunny day in the city to break social isolation and either go to the beach or walk on the boardwalk, many of them without masks and disrespecting the order against forming large groups.

According to the City Hall, beach attendance will only be permitted after the Covid-19 vaccine is found.

In Ipanema, a couple clashed with the officers, who tried to get them off the sand because they were not wearing masks, but they were eventually released after tense moments, with shouting and scuffling surrounding the police intervention. The fine for not wearing a mask is R$107.
