Opinion: will Spain, like Italy before it, slide to the right in tomorrow’s elections?

(Opinion) As Spain’s July 23rd election approaches, indicators suggest a shift in political leadership with Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s Popular Party (PP) as a likely contender.

The party experienced rejuvenation under Feijóo after seeming to falter when the Socialist Party, led by Pedro Sánchez, assumed power in 2018.

Sánchez’s tenure, marked by political coalitions, faced challenges despite his efforts to increase Spain’s EU prominence post-Brexit.

Josep Borrell, Sánchez’s former foreign minister, currently holds a prominent EU position, suggesting strategic motivations.

In the 2021 municipal elections, PP, led by Isabel Ayuso, achieved significant victories over Sánchez’s PSOE, indicating a shift in PP’s leadership.

Feijóo is continuing the legacy of influential politicians from Galicia.

The Sánchez-led coalition experienced difficulties as Podemos, allied with him, gained more influence.

A law designed to counter sexual harassment, although well-intended, faced criticism.

This political climate saw the rise of Yolanda Díaz, former minister and founder of Sumar, a new left-wing party, which has absorbed Podemos.

Opinion polls suggest a rightward shift in Spain’s political landscape, albeit with a chance for the left.

Analyst Kiko Llaneras indicates a probable majority win for the PP.

This potential change could disrupt European political alliances, particularly with Europe’s parliamentary elections due next year.

Sánchez’s era, marred by internal conflicts and governance challenges, along with the pandemic and economic crisis, have tested the Socialists and their allies.

A debate on July 11 seemed to further impact Sánchez’s poll standings.

In conclusion, Spain may be heading for a political transition from a left-leaning government to a right-wing leadership, echoing recent shifts in Italy.
