Rapid change in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah attracts considerable wealth

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), a region in the north of the United Arab Emirates, is undergoing considerable transformation, becoming an increasingly attractive location for high-net-worth individuals.

About 45 minutes from Dubai International Airport and known for its mountains, the emirate is now a haven for wealthy individuals.

This shift can be attributed to a bold foreign direct investment strategy that draws in five-star hotels, industrialists, and thrill-seeking tourists from various countries, including Russia and the Czech Republic.

Numerous luxury projects, such as Wynn Resorts’ planned US$3.9 billion resort, are also being pursued.

RAK is also expected to draw more wealthy individuals via the UAE’s citizenship-by-investment program.

The region is simultaneously developing a free zone for digital and virtual asset companies, and there are plans to establish a superyacht storage facility and a yacht manufacturing hub.

A European yacht manufacturer invests 30 million euros (US$33 million) to produce luxury catamarans in RAK.

Despite previous project failures and the emirate’s relatively small size, RAK has been achieving record-breaking visitor numbers.

The region saw over 1.1 million overnight stays in the previous year, a 16% increase from the prior year, with a significant rise in foreign tourists.

The government targets wealthy Chinese individuals as travel restrictions related to Covid-19 ease.

Russia is among the emirate’s top markets, boosted by continued direct flights between the UAE and the Kremlin since troops were sent to Ukraine.

But the emirate has also attracted significant traffic from Kazakhstan and the UK.

A prospective project by Wynn Resorts could put RAK between the two top global gaming destinations of Macau and Las Vegas, making it an appealing destination for affluent tourists from the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

The aim is to convert this increased tourism into long-term economic benefits. A

An Ernst & Young study commissioned by the government suggests that RAK’s annual tourist numbers could quadruple by 2030, and the population could rise from 400,000 to 650,000.

RAK’s future growth plans are led by Michigan-educated Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, with a significant contribution from his daughter, Sheikha Amneh Al Qasimi, who chairs RAK’s Office of Investment and Development.

Despite concerns about the legal aspects of gambling under Islamic law, international hotel groups are investing in RAK, adding to its appeal.

While RAK still faces challenges, it is steadily positioning itself as a desirable alternative within the UAE for wealthy individuals and large-scale developments.
