Mexican Foreign Minister says in U.S. that sending arms to Ukraine does not help peace

During her official visit to Washington, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena expressed concerns about Western nations’ ongoing supply of weapons to Ukraine, stating that it does not promote peace in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Bárcena emphasized the importance of focusing on peace instead of war, stating, “The continuous supply of arms to Ukraine is not beneficial.”

Speaking at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington, she clarified that while Mexico opposes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, citing violations of the UN Charter, the country stands firmly behind peace negotiations.

She urged Russia and Ukraine to dialogue and seek a ceasefire or end hostilities.

Bárcena pointed out the recent peace talks in Saudi Arabia as a positive step, asserting that Mexico supports such peace initiatives.

On her first official visit to the U.S., the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs discussed migration, arms trafficking, and the influx of fentanyl.

She highlighted the close ties between U.S. President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which bolster bilateral relations.

Bárcena also mentioned Mexico’s collaboration with the international coalition initiated by U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, to counteract fentanyl trafficking, a synthetic opioid responsible for record overdose deaths.

She pointed out that the chemical precursors from Asia used to manufacture fentanyl not only moved from Mexico to the U.S. but also from the U.S. to Mexico.

Bárcena emphasized the necessity to monitor entry points from Mexico to the U.S. and vice versa.
