Food war heats up: FBI warns of cyberattacks on farms – One farm fights back

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The food wars have gone hot — and even the mainstream is noticing. Even as the fires and explosions destroying our food supply are broadly reported, the FBI warns of cyberattacks on farming infrastructure.

Something important to understand about cyberattacks: It’s not just about ransomware, holding data and controls hostage. Many operating systems of physical spaces and machinery are now automated and vulnerable.

It’s pretty surprising and very frightening to know how easily certain systems can be “hacked”. Thermostat settings, irrigation systems, refrigeration units, heating and cooling, fire suppression systems, and electrical safety can all be used to damage buildings or spoil products.

Fires can be started and automated sprinkler systems disabled. I could go on, but I hesitate to give anyone ideas.

As this awareness grows, one farm has stood up to NY state, refusing to comply with Bird Flu orders.

(The large-scale reduction in farm animals in Ireland comes after the passing of the jurisdiction’s first-ever climate act, requiring the farming sector to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and reduce methane emissions by almost 50% over the same period.)
