GM Brazil Suspends Delivery, Recalls Onix Plus Because of Fires

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – GM has decided to suspend deliveries of the Chevrolet Onix Plus as of last Tuesday night, November 5th. The measure was taken after QUATRO RODAS magazine had published, on Monday, the report of two cases of sedan fires in Brazil.

In an internal announcement issued to dealers and obtained by the magazine, the manufacturer internally announced the suspension and conceded for the first time that the fire could be caused by a design flaw.

In addition, it reported having taken the “initiative to announce a recall”.

The statement does not specify which would be the “very specific” conditions of pressure, temperature, humidity, and fuel composition, and has not set a deadline to formalize the recall.

However, the fact is that two fires were recorded in regions of the country with very different climates: one in the courtyard of the Gravataí plant (RS) and another in the Northeast state of Piauí.

QUATRO RODAS has already reached dealerships in the state of São Paulo (SP). Some state that they still have the car for regular delivery, while others have already confirmed the suspension.

One of them admitted that the manufacturer not only suspended the delivery of units already in stock but also the supply of new units to the network.

According to one of the dealers interviewed, the manufacturer is carrying out “an update of engine management software” on models already produced and not yet delivered.

With the announcement, the magazine’s report was able to state that this is the fourth fault involving the Onix Plus reported to dealerships.

Three others had already been exclusively disclosed by QUATRO RODAS on Tuesday: one in the grounding nut, another in the dashboard electric cable and a third related to conflicts in the engine’s serial number.
