Evangelicals Demand R$1 Billion Compensation from ‘Porta dos Fundos’

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The comedy troupe Porta dos Fundos and Netflix were sued by the Pentecostal Church Brasa Viva. The religious group brought a lawsuit in which they demand the payment of R$1 billion (US$ 250 million) compensation for moral damages for the 2018 Christmas special, which satirizes with the biblical passage of the “Last Supper”.

In the satire, after getting intoxicated during the supper, Jesus’ disciples wake up with a hangover and realize that they have lost the Messiah. Inspired by the American film “The Hangover”, the film was banned in Singapore at the time.

The lawsuit is still pending at the 5th District Civil Court in Rio de Janeiro.

Gay Jesus should also be banned

Another production by Porta dos Fundos has stirred up even more controversy. Two months ago, Netflix released the 2019 Christmas Special in partnership with the comedy channel “Porta dos Fundos” satirizing the biblical passage that recounts the return of Jesus Christ after 40 days in the desert.

The movie sparked controversy on social media by portraying Jesus Christ as a homosexual, upsetting religious who soon petitioned for the movie to be removed from the platform, otherwise, they would stop subscribing to the streaming service.

Netflix ignored religious criticism and not only maintained the movie on its platform but also announced another Christmas Special in partnership with the humor channel for 2020.

The “Porta dos Fundos” also ignored the criticism and decided to make a new video ironizing the comments of evangelicals on social media.

Now, the National Council of Brazilian Pastors and Bishop Robson Rodovalho are demanding compensation of R$1,000 (US$250) for each person who felt insulted by the Netflix special.
