Venezuela Takes Steps to Join BRICS Bank

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has asked Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to apply for the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) membership.

After meeting with Dilma Rousseff, the bank’s leader, he gave the order in China.

Maduro and Rousseff discussed the bank’s role in creating a fair global economic system.

The President said Venezuela aims to become a full member of this international bank.

He is optimistic about joining the BRICS group and expects Venezuela to become a full member soon.

BRICS started with five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Now, it includes Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia.

Background

The BRICS group started as an alliance of emerging economies. It aims to challenge traditional financial and political powerhouses.

The New Development Bank serves as a financial arm of this group. It focuses on infrastructure and sustainable development projects.

Maduro’s move comes amid economic challenges in Venezuela. The country faces inflation, poverty, and political instability.

Joining the NDB could provide Venezuela with new funding sources. It could also give the nation more global economic influence.

This isn’t Venezuela’s first attempt to expand its international alliances. Maduro has sought closer ties with Russia and China in the past.

These efforts aim to reduce dependence on Western countries. However, joining BRICS could lead to mixed reactions globally.

In recent years, the BRICS group has expanded its membership. It shows the group’s willingness to include diverse economies.

Yet, every new member brings its own set of economic and political conditions. These could affect the group’s overall goals and dynamics.
