Maduro and Petro intensify their “bilateral relationship” with a meeting in Caracas

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, held an extraordinary meeting this Sunday at the Miraflores Palace, Caracas, after the complete reopening of the border between the two countries last week.

Thus, Petro, who has traveled accompanied by the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Álvaro Leyva, has landed at the Maiquetía International Airport, on the outskirts of Caracas, where he has been received by the Colombian ambassador in Venezuela, Armando Benedetti, and by the Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez.

Senator María Fernanda Cabal has responded to Benedetti’s “happiness” after receiving Petro. “Happy communists, while citizens suffer the ravages of their nefarious government and its dangerous advertisements,” she wrote on Twitter.

The meeting between Maduro and Petro, which has lasted almost three hours and has ended without statements to the press from the leaders, has served to make an “exhaustive review of the fundamental issues of the bilateral relationship”, according to the statement published later.

The meeting also discussed the progress in the opening of border points between the two countries which, according to what the authorities have announced, has allowed “improving the conditions of Colombian and Venezuelan citizens in the border areas.”

They have also agreed to jointly promote binational agreements “on agricultural, industrial and services issues, as well as infrastructure development.”

Finally, the creation of a technical commission has been promised to build connectivity projects between the Caribbean Sea and the Colombian Pacific.

“We have a clear joint work path that will continue to yield positive results for our countries, in different areas. Long live the union between Colombia and Venezuela!”, the Venezuelan leader has published about the meeting that he describes as “broad and very fruitful”.
