Foreign trade in Paraguay records in 2022 first deficit in 35 years, unprecedented in history

Paraguay’s foreign trade experienced an increase of 7 percent at the end of 2022 compared to the value registered in 2021 after having carried out transactions for 29 billion dollars, according to the report of the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP). aired this Thursday.

From January to December 2022, total exports reached 13.8 billion dollars, 1.5 percent lower than the previous year’s records, where 144 countries were the destinations of the South American country.

For their part, total imports reached 15.2 billion of the same currency, representing an increase of 16.1 percent compared to 2021, and registering external purchases in more than 162 countries of origin.

This leaves, as a result of the trade, balance a deficit of 1.3 billion dollars, a different result from the surplus registered in the same period of 2021.

According to analysts from the state parent bank, this deficit balance in Paraguay’s foreign trade is unprecedented in history, being registered for the first time in 35 years, since from 1987 to 2021, the trade balance had been in surplus.
