In the first half of 2023, there is a decrease in intentional homicides in Mexico

In the first half of 2023, there was a 1.68% reduction in intentional homicides in Mexico compared to the same timeframe in 2022.

Specifically, in June, murders decreased by 4.91% year-on-year. This represents a shift from the upward trend observed in the year’s first quarter.

The Secretary of Security has indicated a 17% decrease in homicides since December 2018.

Approximately half of these homicides are concentrated in six Mexican states.

While federal crimes saw an overall increase of 4.54% in the first half of the year, including crimes related to firearms, explosives, and tax violations, significant decreases were noted in areas such as organized crime, financial crime, human smuggling, and crimes committed by public servants.

Common crimes showed mixed trends. For instance, theft from transportation companies increased, while robbery in all its forms decreased.

Femicides, or gender-based killings of women and girls, decreased by 19.19% compared to the same period in 2022, although a slight uptick was observed in June.

In a broader perspective, 2022 recorded a 7.1% annual drop in homicides compared to previous years, indicating an overall downward trend.
