AMLO taps Alicia Bárcena as Mexico’s new Foreign Minister

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico has appointed Alicia Bárcena, the country’s current ambassador to Chile, as the successor to Marcelo Ebrard as head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

Ebrard stepped down from his role to run as the ruling Morena party’s candidate for the 2024 elections.

Bárcena, a seasoned diplomat and biologist, has previously held various federal positions within Mexico and served as the coordinator of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

She was the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) from 2008 to 2022, making her the first woman to lead the organization.

She was appointed as Mexico’s ambassador to Chile in June last year.

As Bárcena prepares to assume her new position in the next 10 days, the current undersecretary of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, Carmen Moreno Toscano, will manage the office’s responsibilities.
