Approval of Colombian president reaches 56% in first government poll

A poll yesterday night showed that 56 percent of citizens have a favorable view of Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s first month in office.

Petro’s disapproval rating was 20 percent, according to the first poll conducted during his term by the Invamer polling institute. Colombia’s vice president, Francia Márquez, received 54 percent approval and 18 percent disapproval.

The poll asked citizens whether they thought the situation in the country was improving or worsening. Thirty-three percent of respondents said the situation had improved, and 48 percent said it had deteriorated.

For his part, the head of state retweeted the same poll on his Twitter account, which featured the headline from a local media outlet, “Petro started on the right foot. His approval rating among Colombians is 56 percent.”

Petro took office Aug. 7 after winning July’s second round of elections.
