The US alerts on the persecution of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua

The regime of Daniel Ortega has intensified its attacks against the Nicaraguan Catholic Church, according to a report prepared by the US Government that reviews the status of religious freedom in more than 200 countries worldwide.

“Throughout the year, President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo ordered the detention, exile, and verbal attacks against priests and bishops, calling them criminals and coup plotters,” the document states.

The report emphasizes the case of Bishop Rolando Alvarez, who was arrested last August and sentenced to serve a 27-year prison term.

It also refers that at least 55 priests were forced to leave the country due to the persecution unleashed by Ortega against them.

Finally, attention is drawn to the spying methods used by the Nicaraguan regime to harass the faithful during the mass celebration in the temples of the Central American country.

Thus, it is clear that the regime’s agents “attended to monitor the sermons, preventing some services from taking place due to intimidation”.
