Argentina evaluates using quotas in the resumption of meat exports – newspaper report

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL –  La Nación newspaper reports that the Argentine government is expected to announce a new model for beef exports in the country next Tuesday. Shipments were suspended for 30 days last month, and the deadline ends this Sunday.

The country will likely set quotas for industries to allow sales abroad to resume, the publication reported. One possibility is that the government will force companies to reduce their export volume by 50% – except for the country’s quotas on kosher meat – in addition to limiting shipments of the cuts most popular in the country.

“The idea is that with the new rules we are finishing drafting, we can resume exports starting next week and try to guarantee meat on the Argentine table. We want all the popular cuts to be available at affordable prices,” Productive Development Minister Matias Kulfas told the newspaper.

The announcement was scheduled for this Friday, but sources heard by the Argentine newspaper said that President Alberto Fernández wants to explain the new rules first to the livestock sector, which strongly opposes the proposal.
