Fortaleza Beats Corinthians, Reaches Copa Final

Fortaleza clinched their first-ever Copa Sudamericana final spot by defeating Corinthians 2-0.

This victory sets them up for a final match in Punta del Este, Uruguay, on October 28.

They await either LDU of Ecuador or Argentina’s Defensa Y Justicia, who play on Wednesday in Quito.

Under Argentine coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda, Fortaleza made history. They’re the first northeastern Brazilian team to enter this international final.

At Arena Castelão, 60,000 fans cheered them on. In the second half, Yago Pikachu and captain Tinga scored the game-winning goals.

Fortaleza dominated from the start. Their early scoreless efforts were mainly thwarted by Corinthians’ goalkeeper Cassio.

However, the second half told a different story. Pikachu scored at the 49th minute, followed by Tinga’s header at the 55th minute. The consistent pressure paid off.

Under new manager Mano Menezes, Corinthians made a single shot on goal but couldn’t capitalize.

They attempted a comeback but fell short. This is a setback for Corinthians, Brazil’s second most popular team, who haven’t won a title since 2019.

Now, their focus shifts to avoiding relegation in the Brazilian Championship, where they sit 13th.

Background

This win elevates Fortaleza’s profile in Brazilian soccer. Historically, teams from Brazil’s northeastern region have struggled on the international stage.

Now, Fortaleza could shift this narrative. Meanwhile, Corinthians face more existential challenges.

They must improve fast or risk dropping to Brazil’s second-tier league, a shocking outcome for a once-dominant team.

On a broader scale, this match emphasizes the rising competitiveness in South American soccer.

Teams from traditionally lesser-regarded regions are now challenging the status quo. The upcoming final will offer another compelling chapter in this evolving landscape.
