Argentina to invest US$8.3 million in Ushuaia Integrated Naval Base

The Argentine government has announced plans to invest US$8.3 million in the Integrated Naval Base located in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego.

The funding, outlined in Report N°137 of the Chief of Cabinet to the National Congress, represents a significant increase from last year’s investment of 320 million pesos.

According to the Cabinet Office, construction progress has been made since the winter closure in 2022.

Subgrade leveling and the supply of selected soils have been completed, focusing on the perimeter areas where the initial ships will be assembled.

Additionally, the foundation construction for the first building has commenced, including excavation work and the placement of concrete.

In May 2023, as temperatures dropped below 5 degrees, measures were taken to ensure proper concrete curing.

The exposed surface was covered with reinforced nylon polyethylene, and a heater was installed to maintain optimal conditions.

The Integrated Naval Base project, initiated in March 2022, aims to bolster Argentina’s national presence and enhance the country’s development and logistical capabilities in Antarctica and the South Atlantic region.

Minister of Defense, Jorge Taiana, emphasized the significance of the base, stating that it reflects the state’s commitment to the province of Tierra del Fuego as part of Argentina’s bicontinental perspective.

The presence of the Armed Forces in Tierra del Fuego, including the Navy, Army, and Air Force, will be strengthened through this initiative.

The Ushuaia Integrated Naval Base investment demonstrates Argentina’s dedication to advancing its strategic infrastructure and asserting its presence in the region.
