Rio State Government Takes Over Management of Seven Field Hospitals

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Rio de Janeiro state government has decided to take over the management of the seven state field hospitals being prepared to attend to Covid-19 patients.

They were being managed by the NGO Iabas – Institute of Basic and Advanced Health Care. With the decision, the institution will be relieved from the administration of these units.

The decision was based on delays in setting up the hospitals and on the social organization’s management shortcomings.

The inaugurations of the seven units, initially scheduled for late April, have been repeatedly deferred. Only the Maracanã hospital has been completed.

Over the past week, Iabas was dismissed from the administration of the field hospitals in the municipalities of São Gonçalo, Nova Iguaçu, Duque de Caxias, Nova Friburgo, Campos dos Goytacazes and Casimiro de Abreu. However, it would continue building these units and managing the Maracanã hospital.

According to the decree published by Rio de Janeiro’s Governor Wilson Witzel, the contract and its amendments with the institution will be revoked and the government will requisition all equipment and labor to fight the pandemic, as well as the conclusion of the works.

The State Health Foundation will be in charge of managing the seven field hospitals.

Two other field hospitals which were not under the Iabas administration are now operating: Parque dos Atletas and Lagoa-Barra, both managed by Rede D’Or.
