Covid-19: Fiocruz Study Points to High Lethality in Rio and Overburdened Hospitals

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), through its monitoring bulletin regarding epidemiological weeks 35 and 36, which respectively correspond to the periods from August 23rd to 29th and August 30th to September 5th, the death rate by Covid-19 remains high in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the study, the hospital system in Rio de Janeiro state is overloaded with respect to intensive care unit (ICU) beds, with the capital city of Rio de Janeiro again in the so-called “critical zone”, with an 82 percent occupancy.

According to Fiocruz, this could be explained by the fact that the field hospitals in Rio de Janeiro have been dismantled.

According to Fiocruz, this could be explained by the fact that the field hospitals in Rio de Janeiro have been disabled.
