Brazil’s Left discusses expanding protests against Bolsonaro government

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The organizers of protests against the Bolsonaro government hope to define the model and dates for new demonstrations by Wednesday, June 23.

After Saturday’s increased participation in protests, compared to the May demonstrations, organizations and opposition parties are now discussing whether or not to intensify and expand their protest, including actions that may not be limited to large marches.

Three factors are considered decisive in the group’s next steps: the progress of the Senate’s Covid CPI investigation, the surge of the pandemic, and the date of filing a new impeachment motion – signed by several parties and social organizations.

Called a “super impeachment motion” by some signatories, the document should compile the criminal charges contained in over 100 petitions against Bolsonaro previously submitted to the Chamber of Deputies.

Attorneys linked to the initiative say that the text should be ready in coming weeks. “It’s a new development: in the heat of protests, a unified motion (for impeachment) is presented,” said the leader of the Central of Popular Movements, Raimundo Bonfim.

A number of leaders also suggest expanding the rallies to new types of protests, but a consensus has yet to be reached.

“The doubt is if the next time there won’t be a strike, a roadblock, interspersing them so they won’t just be Saturday protests on Avenida Paulista,” says João Paulo Rodrigues, member of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) national coordination team.
