Number of Deaths in Brazil Rises from 1,924 to 2,141 in 24 hours (April 17th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In a new record, Brazil registered 217 deaths from the novel coronavirus in 24 hours. As a result, the number of deaths by Covid-19 rose to 2,141 on Friday, April 17th, according to data released by the Ministry of Health.

On the same day, the country also reached the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in a single day, with 3,257 new records of people infected between Thursday and Friday.

In total, the Ministry of Health reports that 33,682 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus to date. The mortality rate stands at 6.4 percent.

The region most affected by the novel coronavirus is the Southeast, with 56.6 percent of cases, followed by the Northeast (22.2 percent), North (9.4 percent), South (7.7 percent) and Center-West (4.1 percent).

In São Paulo, the state with the highest number of cases and deaths from the disease in the country, there are 12,841 people infected and 928 deaths. Given the situation, Governor João Doria announced that he will extend quarantine until May 10th.

Rio de Janeiro ranks second, with 4,249 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 341 deaths, followed by Ceará (3,684 confirmed cases and 149 deaths), Pernambuco (2,006 cases and 186 deaths), and Amazonas (1,809 confirmed cases and 145 deaths).
