Itaipu hydropower plant achieves highest production in five years in the first half of the year

The Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, jointly operated by Brazil and Paraguay, has reported a 35% increase in electricity production during the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2022.

This marks the highest production for that period in the past five years, according to a statement from Itaipu Binacional, the binational company managing the plant.

Between January and June, the Itaipu dam generated a total of 40,651,877 megawatt-hours (MWh), surpassing the 30,111,313 MWh produced in the corresponding period of 2022.

The plant’s remarkable performance was highlighted, stating that the production in the first half of this year is equivalent to 2.9 times the annual electricity consumption of Paraguay.

Additionally, the output would be sufficient to meet Brazil’s electricity demand for 28 days or supply the central-west region of Brazil for an entire year.

Located on the Paraná River basin, straddling the border between Brazil and Paraguay, Itaipu hydroelectric power plant played a crucial role in meeting the energy needs of both countries.

In 2022, it contributed to 8.6% of Brazil’s electricity supply and accounted for 86.3% of Paraguay’s electricity supply.

The significant increase in production underscores the plant’s continued importance in providing reliable and substantial electricity generation, supporting the energy requirements of Brazil and Paraguay.
