Brazil: services close 2022 with a high of 8.3%, says IBGE

The volume of services grew for the second consecutive year in 2022, with an 8.3% increase in the annual rate.

The data are from the Monthly Service Survey released on Friday (Feb.10, 2023) by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

In December 2022, the increase was 3.1% compared with the previous month.

With this result, the sector surpassed the record level of the historical series, which began in 2011.

In the month, the service sector was 14.4% above the level recorded before the pandemic in February 2020.

Compared to the same period in 2021, the sector recorded its 22nd consecutive positive rate, advancing 6.0%.

In the last 12 months, the segment decelerated from 8.7% in November to 8.3% in December, reaching the lowest result since October 2021, when the result was 8.1%.

According to IBGE, the rise recorded in December was accompanied by 4 of the 5 activities evaluated by the institute:

  • transports (2.5%),
  • administrative and complementary professional services (3.0%),
  • services provided to households (2.4%),
  • and other services (10.3%).

Only the information and communication services segment registered a drop of -2.2%, its second consecutive.

The greatest impact was registered in Rio de Janeiro (5.0%), São Paulo (0.8%), Minas Gerais (4.6%), and the Federal District (13.4%).

TOURISM

Tourism activities grew 4.1% in December compared to November.

With this result, the sector is 1.5% above the pre-pandemic level and 5.5% below the highest point of the series, reached in February 2014.

In the year-to-date, the high was 29.9%. While compared to December 2021, the segment grew 12.6%.

TRANSPORT

Passenger transport grew 7.1% in December compared to the previous month in the seasonally influenced free series.

Despite the positive result, the segment is 18.2% below the highest point in the historical series in February 2014.

Cargo transportation also registered an increase in December. In the month, the expansion was 1.4%, 0.6% below the highest point of its series in August 2022.
