Brazil Records 105,200 Confirmed Covid-19 Cases, 7,288 Deaths (May 4th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil recorded 105,222 confirmed coronavirus cases on Monday, May 4th, according to data from the Ministry of Health. There were an additional 4,075 infections in a day. The balance shows 7,288 deaths, an increase of 263 in 24 hours.

Last Sunday, May 3rd, the country became the 9th nation to reach the mark of 100,000 people infected. Ahead of Brazil are the United States, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and Turkey. In terms of deaths, the country ranks 6th.

São Paulo, the epicenter of Covid-19 in the country, accounts for 32,187 confirmed cases of the disease and 2,654 deaths.

On Monday, Governor João Doria announced that as of next Thursday, May 7th, wearing a mask will be compulsory for anyone out on the streets in all of the state’s 645 municipalities during the pandemic.

Doria again said he could defer the relaxation of isolation, scheduled to start on May 11th, in cities where quarantine rates are satisfactory.

Among other states with the highest number of people with Covid-19 are: Rio de Janeiro, recording 11,721, Pernambuco, with 8,863, Ceará, with 8,501, Amazonas, with 7,313, and Maranhão, with 4,227.

The Ministry of Health canceled the daily press conference in which the Secretary of Health Surveillance, Wanderson Oliveira, used to introduce the updated figures and answer questions.

“For health reasons, Health Surveillance Secretary Wanderson Oliveira will not be able to attend this Monday’s press conference. As such, there will be no press conference at 5 PM at the Planalto Palace,” the portfolio announced.
