Brazil Counts 20,047 Deaths Caused by Novel Coronavirus, Says Ministry (May 21)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Thursday, May 21st, the Ministry of Health published the most recent balance of cases and deaths caused by the novel coronavirus. The main data are:

20,047 deaths, there were 18,859 on Wednesday (May 20th);
There were 1,188 deaths recorded in 24 hours;
310,087 confirmed cases;
18,508 new cases were included in the balance in 24 hours;
125,960 patients recovered (40.6 percent) .

The country had reached the 10,000 death toll mark on May 9th. The number doubled in 12 days. Before that, the 5,000 mark had been recorded on April 28th, and it took 11 days to reach 10,000 deaths.

20,000 in the world

Along with Brazil, which reached the mark 65 days after the first death, the following countries have also passed the 20,000 mark:

Italy (20,465) on April 13th, 53 days after the first death;
Spain (20,002) on April 17th, 46 days after the first death;
United Kingdom (20,223) on April 21st, 47 days after the first death;
United States (20,255) on April 9th, 41 days after the first death.
