Brazil: pedestrian bridge in Brazil collapses in the early hours of the morning; some people are missing

A pedestrian bridge, which is over the Mampituba River and connects the cities of Torres in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Passo de Torres in Santa Catarina (SC), collapsed around 2:30 am this Monday (20).

The firemen were called and rescued at least 30 people from the water; three are missing, including a mother and a one-year-old child.

The bridge was only for pedestrians; it was 30 meters long and supported by cables.

According to the municipality of Torres, about 100 people were walking over the bridge at the time of the accident, despite a sign saying that it had a capacity of only 20.

They were walking from Passo de Torres back to Torres after a Carnival party.

“Very sad. Now it’s just to stand in solidarity with the people and hope that there are no other victims,” said the mayor of Passo de Torres, Valmir Rodrigues, after visiting the site this morning.
