Reviving the North Ring Road: São Paulo’s New Route to the Airport

Construction on São Paulo’s North Ring Road resumes this Thursday in Arujá, ending a nearly six-year hiatus.

Via Appia, the project’s new manager, takes charge of the 44-kilometer segment designed to encircle Brazil’s major metropolis.

Initiated in December 2001 with the West segment, the project includes constructing 12 kilometers of tunnels, targeting a completion date in September 2026.

The São Paulo State Transport Agency (Artesp) recently confirmed an important development.

A 3.6-kilometer link will be added, directly connecting the North Ring Road (Rodoanel) to Guarulhos International Airport, through a contractual amendment.

This addition will significantly improve access to Brazil’s busiest airport.

Currently, the main airport route is via Hélio Smidt Highway (SP-109), connecting to the Dutra and Ayrton Senna highways and the congested Marginal Tietê.

The new North Ring Road section will offer a direct, congestion-free path.

It will benefit travelers and freight carriers from the city’s southern and western areas and the broader São Paulo metropolitan region.

Discussions are ongoing about the timing and investment for this new section.

Brendon Azevedo Ramos, CEO of Via Appia, is coordinating actively with the state government and Guarulhos municipality.

Advanced studies, approved last December, have resulted from these discussions.

These studies propose a connection between the Fernão Dias and Dutra highways to improve service to the metropolitan area and the airport.

The planned route will follow SP-036, transitioning into Candeas Avenue in the urban area, and will include new access ramps to local roads.

This project involves redesigning urban infrastructure to improve traffic flow, developed with Guarulhos municipality, a strong supporter of this route.

This expansion aims to ease travel and boost local and regional economies by enhancing connectivity.
