Former President Martín Torrijos’ (2004-2009) candidacy for the May 2024 general elections in Panama was confirmed by the Popular Party (PP), as announced by the party.
The extraordinary National Congress of the PP ratified his candidacy with the support of 87% of its delegates.
The confirmation cements his departure from the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), a party established by his late father, General Omar Torrijos.
Torrijos Jr., as per a PP release, expressed his intent to implement new policies if elected. He also proposed the creation of the Panama Possible Movement to collaborate with the best minds for governing.
In other candidate news, ex-president Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014) secured his presidential candidacy for his new Realizando Metas (RM) party in June.
Panama’s vice-president, José Carrizo, and lawyer Rómulo Roux also confirmed their candidacies under the PRD and Democratic Change (CD) parties respectively.
