Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has declared plans to privatize the country’s Public Television (RAI) and sell Banca Monte dei Paschi, the oldest bank in Italy.
The restructuring of RAI is intended to transition it from a centralized system to one that is merit-based and serves the public interest.
Meloni intends to reduce the political partisan influence on public television and promote a more diverse representation of Italian culture.
This follows another significant privatization during Meloni’s term – the privatization of Ita Airways, which included a partnership with Lufthansa.
The proposed privatization of Banca Monte dei Paschi aims to boost the competitiveness of the Italian credit system, leveraging its extensive customer base, branch network, and assets.
This move aligns Italy with other developed economies that have opted for divestment of assets salvaged during economic downturns.
Should the sale of Banca Monte dei Paschi be finalized, it would mark a major milestone in the privatization efforts of Meloni’s administration.
With these initiatives, Italy aligns with countries like Greece regarding modernization and privatization of public services.
